Sunshine in my Soul today!!

I know, you’ve heard the saying before.

Sunshine in my Soul today!

I want to share my sunshine and it’s because at the ripe age of soon-to-be 72, I made a decision to retire! It’s with mixed feelings and emotions but I know it is what I need to do. My life has been filled with friends and family that want the best for me. I think God is pleased with my decision. I talk to him daily for guidance and inspiration and through my prayers I know God is listening. I guess many of you don’t understand that life but it’s one that’s given me peace and happiness.

I look forward to spending quite moments in my hammock reflecting on the pass and planning the future. My husband and I need this time to travel and enjoy the later years of our marriage. I want to enjoy the days of sleeping late, eating when I’m hungry, and napping on rainy days when I can’t be outside.

I look forward to spending time with my family and laughing about silly things. My friends will fill my days of fun and adventure too. They have always been my inspiration.

Life is full of sunshine and it’s in my soul today!

Fall Season is here!

Fall season is here!

Its my favorite time of the year. Leaves turning colors of red, yellow, and green. Trees shedding their robes of summer heat and grasses turn brown and sound “chunchy” from heat and wear of the mover and children’s feet. Fall season is here!

I am inspired to remember pallets with my sister making Clover necklaces and looking up at the clouds. Some of my creativity was inspiration from the changes of  seasons.

Memories are what makes life special!

Thank you Fall Season,

Doris

Plant a Garden of Flowers

Plant a Garden of Flowers start with the mind-set, “I want to watch flowers grow each spring and always know they will be returning to their beautiful glory.”

In my world of Plant a Garden of Flowers, I like to grow perennials so that each spring I can know that something spectacular is about to happen.

Queen’s Garden

Working year round in a garden can be over-whelming to the beginner. But it all starts out with a simple plan of action.

  • Research the interent for plant ideas and information. Check out Gardens and Crafts

  • Prepare a landscape design for your garden

  • Ask friends for cuttings of their plants.

  • Shop garden centers for discounts, Lowe’s and Home Depot .

  • Check our native plants to your zone.

  • Look around at neighborhoods in your area and take photos of the plants you like.

  • Go to your local botanical garden and wander around and see what’s blooming.

When we moved into our current home, I brought with me hosta in grocery bags that laid in my yard for a few weeks before I could get around to planting them.

I also talked to my friend, Michelle, and her and I applied to the County Extension for a Master Gardening class. I was thrilled when our names were selected! Having a friend that loves gardening is one of life’s treasures. Michelle shared more than gardening we shared love of friendship. Life is better with a Garden Buddy.

Life gives us choices and just like a garden, I want to be assured of tomorrow’s beauty and friendships. Some things are taken for granted, sunshine, soft breezes, birds chirping, and the sweet smell of flowers. They remind me God’s beauty is all around. What if you wake up one morning and suddenly your eye sight has diminished and left you blind. What if your hearing is slowly changing to silence? Think how life would change if you couldn’t enjoy the beautiful flowers along life’s pathways. God has given us some many things to be thankful for. I want to inspire each of you to Plant a Garden of Flowers and you too will be assured of God’s beauty season after season.

God Bless the gardeners!

I’m Waiting with Excitement

I’m Waiting with Excitement to celebrate my 70th birthday in style!  I’ve got 2 great friends to share it with and a wonderful husband to help guide our paths. Okay, maybe the word isn’t guide but he’ll be along for the ride. It will be a trip to put in the Queen’s history book!

I’ve gathered some fabulous designer looking outfits for a photo shoot in the streets of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. That is where my heart longs to be and suck in all the artistry that makes this city so rare. It is one of the best places to visit and see amazing artist at work.

iris_apfel

My adventure will be to dress up in style and take some photos of me and my girlfriends in the streets of Mexico. I love the idea that women over 50 present themselves as bold and beautiful.

I love Iris Apfel and how she boldly wears her clothes. She is an inspiration to older ladies. I too, have a passion for bright colors and want to incorporate that in my wardrobe. I think my friends would say, “Yes, she is a colorful lady” and I don’t want to disappoint them.

I’m waiting with excitement to dress up and go out and see what the streets of San Miguel have to offer. This will be my 4th time there and I know I will not be disappointed. I can’t get enough of the culture, art, and the shopping there.

I will definitely update this post with my our photos of the memorable time but until then I’m waiting with excitement and know the days are ticking off. I still have to cancel mail and paper, talk to my local bank, and verify my minutes with my provider. Oh, I forgot, I must start packing because I have a lot of stuff. My husband says one suitcase but a girl’s got to have jewelry, accessories, makeup, meds, and my tablet to document the vacation.

Check out Things to do in San Miguel de Allende, you too might decided to travel to this amazing art community!

I’m waiting with excitement in Alabama and heading to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico for a holiday!

God Bless, Doris

Self Publishing Part 3

Self Publishing Part 3

Are you ready to move on with Self Publishing Part 3? I am here to tell you Rome wasn’t built in a day! You must buckle down and focus on the end result. Make lists with daily points to complete. I would not make that list too long. Many times we all are anxious to get the job done but lose ourselves because it overwhelms us. I set a goal of completing certain areas of book writing on a weekly basis. Don’t let yourself fall into a slump, it’s time to get real.

I Think I Can!

                        Self-Publishing

Focus-Focus-Focus

1-Focus on illustrations – this may be illustrations you draw, select from various friends or the internet, or need the help of a professional. Don’t make the mistake thinking you can do it by yourself. Don’t forget to get permission and a signed contract to use the images in your book. You will also need a bio page of your preferred illustrator.

2-Focus on your book contents page – arrange your chapters with a focus on the reader instead of the author. Chapters require a flow of information to give the reader an easy guide throughout the book.

3-Focus on quotes – quotes from famous people can give your book a sense of ownership and enhance the book tremendously.

4- Focus on costs– a very important part of the book writing process. Talk with your advisor and get a detailed list of items required to complete your project. Don’t just assume the company will cover costs such as, book cover, copyright, etc. Research and research your options.

5- Focus on distribution costs will rise with many attributing factors such as design elements, color illustrations, and selecting a kindle version. I hope by now you did your research and are on your way to having your book cost under control. Yes, things will come up but keep your head focused on costs.

Self Publishing Support

I encourage you to be creativity and get the assistance of your friends and family. Especially let them know you’re in your final days of being a self published writer. Others being behind you and supporting your efforts will give you a rush to help you feel accomplished. I visited a site that inspired me and I think you will be happy with a post of this kind too,  book writing .

I congratulate you as a writer and let’s keep in touch. I hope in some small way I have given you tools to be inspired. Self publishing is a goal that is obtainable. My post, Self Publishing Part 3, contains 5 areas to focus on and complete on your way to become the best writer of year!

Sending inspiration, Doris aka Queen Rose

Self Publishing Part 2

Self Publishing!
Part 2

Six avenues of research in your quest to become a self-published author.

  1. Select your self publishing company. Communicate daily with your advisor.
  2. Enlist the people in your circle of friends to give you feed-back. They will be honest and give you loads of good advice.
  3. Select a person to proof read your chapters. ( You can hire a professional. I chose several of my friends to help.)
  4. Research your title to see if it ranks high with Google. Be creative! It needs to be something catchy.
  5. Your book cover design is most important. Select an image to inspire your audience and make them want to open the book and read.
  6. Keep colored photos to a minimal. Color photos can drive up the cost of production. Black and white are cheaper.

Hints to consider

  • How much are you willing to spend? You can purchase a medium priced package for under $1,000. It will include loads of features and business support to answer all your thousands of questions.
  • I suggest a book calendar to keep you on track. Don’t try to do too many things at once. Build your calendar around topics to be completed. Work with one thing at a time. Start with the most important and work down.

 BELIEVE

You CAN become a self publish author.

Please feel free to contact me and let’s discuss ways to help you Change Your World with friendship and kindness! I welcomed a change and it blessed so many of my girlfriends lives. Yes, we joined the Red Hat Society and found what we were looking for.

Our first years, 2002, we met monthly and it was always fun and exciting. We met the queen of the Red Hat Society, Sue Ellen Cooper, at Opryland Hotel and danced with 2,000 ladies dressed in purple and pink with red boas flying around. I heard later the feathers stopped up their vents to the air-conditioner system. Now that is a sight to visualize.

Self Publishing Part 1

I Think I Can

I Think I Can!

Self Publishing is our topic and I am sharing my experience and with all who keep reading.

Maybe you think you will never be able to gather all the research needed. Sometimes it crosses your mind but maybe you don’t have the confidence to forge ahead. It is a over-whelming task unless you take it step-by-step. Begin to rethink the idea. Tell yourself, “I Think I Can self publish.”  I’m here to help you begin. Many other bloggers have excellent blogs with information that can get you on your way.  I’ve been in your shoes. I learn to focus on step 1 and it taught me to realize my potential. Now I want to pass it on!

Steps to consider prior to Self Publishing Part 1:

  1. Do you have a story to tell that will give the reader pleasure?

  2. Are you aware of costs involved to self publish your book?

  3. Will you give your time to make your dream come true?

If you answered yes to these three questions go to Part 1.

Quick Notes

  • Find a room or hide away where you can write and be free from distractions.

  • Purchase a journal or notebook and special pen. ( maybe a pencil is the best choice)

  • Make sure you have good lighting for long periods of writing.

  • Keep a note pad on your night stand. Thoughts come to you when your mind is going over the events of the day.

Self Publishing Part 1

Several ideas come to mind to help you get started. Start research on self-publishing and especially for a rebuttal self-publishing company. There are many companies to choose from with various plans available to help you throughout the process. With so many available, you need to view their credentials and background before you decide. My choice was Outskirts Press  . I know Amazon and others now are in the business too. All it takes is research, research

  1. Begin to write your story with either the use of pen and paper. You might want to use a feature on the internet also.

  2. If you are writing your memories then talk with family members to get their perspective on relatives and events.

  3. A title is very important part of your book. Just think about a catchy phrase to lure your readers. It can wait for you to discover one that fits your . If you have one selected, I suggest you request a copy right to secure it from being used by another author.

  4. Research the internet for a self publishing company to handle your writings. This is an important step and please do read the fine print. You want to own publishing rights!

  5. Engage an illustrator to produce your images and front cover. (You may want to use selections pre-made with your publisher)

  6. Look for photographs or images that speak to you and convey your message.

  7. Make a list of your chapters to be included in your Contents page.

  8. Research images and photographs for your book. Gather some old and new and maybe even some funny ones to give your book humor.

A Self Publishing Company is a great choice on your way to become an author.

I hope you will continue to follow my blog and the second part will be featured in my blog next week. Keep trying to follow your dreams and believe in yourself. I know you too will begin to say,

“Self Publishing is for me!”

Keep your dream alive! Doris

Looking for Art in all the Right Places

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende

Who would have thought it? I fell in love with Mexico after traveling there 3 times and another trip planned for 2016. I am thrilled that my path has led me to a place filled with joy and interesting people. I love the Mexican culture. Smiling faces, strolling Maracihi bands, and parades. I don’t know the language very well but like a crazy lady, (that’s me) I just add a “O” at the end of my words. That’s me, crazy lady that’s right, trying to have fun in this life and making sure I get all the laughter and adventures I can.

Check out this for more about San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Fun in San Miguel del Alende,Mexico

Fun in San Miguel del Allende,Mexico

My past trips to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico brought joy to my life! My husband, friends and I spent 6 weeks in the town roaming around and finding quaint little shops and eateries. Wow, the food is more than fabulous. Fresh fruits, ice cream, tacos, and even carrot cake in Mexico. The corners of town are filled with little stations of families selling their staples. I love the corner ice cream shop selling raspberry, it’s my friends favorite. Fresh fruits and pears so large you have to save part of it for later. Gosh, it’s all grown there and mostly free from pesticides.

Dia de Muertos

Day of the Dead by Queen Rose

Looking for art in San Miguel is what drives me back to that beautiful place. San Miguel artist are on every street. Small out-of-the-way spaces that seem to draw you in. Colorful pieces of Mexican history are there for the viewing. Day of the Dead figurines, burros, straw hats, talavera plates, cups, and many other items.  I found a love for the Day of the Dead art (I painted a canvas as a memory) and painted a few canvas paintings for myself and for sale.

Check out my blog post, The Queen’s Art Inspiration for more details on art in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

“Looking for art in all the right places”

Queen looking for Mexican trinkets

Queen looking for Mexican Art & trinkets

I especially like the silver and various stones sold in the silver shops. Our last trip I bought several opals and found a jeweler that let me design my ring and bracelet. He could make them and have them ready within 2 days. It is amazing!

Smashingeggs

We participated in a Mexican ritual Cascarones Day involves decorating eggs and when the signal is given the object is to run around “smashing” the eggs on your friends head! (the eggs are filled with glitter, etc) I know, it was really crazy. You can buy the eggs from the local children and families and when night falls someone signals the time and everyone starts cracking the cascarones (in their hand) over someone’s head. The Mexican tradition is good luck to have a cascarone crack over your head is an honor. My girlfriend that traveled with us had a blast. She just ran around everywhere smashing eggs on anyone in sight. We had a really fun time. Some of our clothes didn’t survive that night. It was all worth a few minutes of laughter.

My favorite time spent in Mexico is relaxing in the 85 degree year round weather. We bask in the sunshine and drank margaritas whenever possible. The only problem with Mexican tequila is it is VERY strong! Beware of that if you decide to travel there. Ice would not weaken the taste and the drinks were 90% tequila and 10% triple sec and lime. Too many of them and you will be dancing in the Jardin.(that’s what we did) The Jardin is a gathering place for tourists and Mexican families during the day and night. The Mariachi bands play and it invites you to sit and linger for a while.

My next trip is January 2016 for 2 weeks. Yeh Haw! Traveling with my husband and 2 friends will be over the top fun. We will be celebrating a milestone birthday (2 of us) and looking for art in the streets of San Miguel de Allende Looking for art in all the right places!

Hasta la vista, Doris aka Queen Rose

Feel it, Believe it, Pass it on!

I love to write! I guess you could say it’s been in my blood from an early age. I like to keep lists and starting writing down my thoughts  when I used my writing as a stress release. Writing helps me to keep focused on the big picture of life. Feel it, Believe it, Pass it on! The Power of Friendships helps to keep me focused on the big picture!

In 2001 I started a Red Hat group of friends to meet and greet monthly so that we could share our life stories. Of course, I named myself Queen of the Flashy Flamingos. My friends were so excited to have a group to belong to and our group activities include lunch, conventions, and travel. We travel to fun places like Nashville, Atlanta, Savannah, Las Vegas and even San Miguel, Mexico.

I began thinking of ideas for a book and worked endlessly for 6 years accumulating articles, papers, quotes, and an illustrator. I self-published with New York Institution Arts & Design and the end results were amazing. It challenged  me to be a self-published writer.

My published book, Feel it, Believe it, Pass it on!  The Power of Friendships, is available in paperback, e-book file, and kindle. My pen name is Queen Rose Flamingo.  is available at Amazon , Barnes and Noble , or Outskirts Press, Inc .  If you would like to purchase directly, please fill out the request.
